Servo-Auxiliary Concept
Most auxiliary rudder systems like the South Atlantic S 500 or S 600 on the market are servo-driven – meaning they employ a servo rudder to drive the auxiliary rudder. Instead of lines to the boat’s wheel/tiller to drive the main rudder, there are connected to the unit’s auxiliary rudder. The servo-auxiliary systems are directly steering the boat with their auxiliary rudders.
Advantages
The South Atlantic S 500 or S 600 main advantages:
- Less complex – does not increase overall length as much. It is possible to remove the servo unit in seconds
- Ability to remove South Atlantic rudder – servo-auxiliary rudder Lift up
- Ability to install off center - The same physic laws apply to every system in the hole market-
- The auxiliary rudder has maximum leverage for turning the boat from its position off the stern and the main rudder can be locked in place to take care of weather helm.

when a servo pendulum self-steering wind-vane like the S 440 can´t fit the requirements of a given sailboat (Hydraulic rudder gear, very big force needed to turn the rudder, etc), auxiliary rudder systems are the way to go.
